watchdocumentaries.com/going-clear-scientology-and-the-prison-of-belief/This is a good doco about one of my favorite rabbit holes, Scientology. L. Ron Hubbard's association with Jack Parsons, and thus with Aleister Crowley, is documented here. According to one of Hubbard's biographers, Dianetics was actually written by Sarah Northrup, the paramour he stole from Jack Parsons before his (that is, Hubbard's) subsequent bigamous marriage to her. Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard are endlessly fascinating to me. Hubbard was a genuine psychopath. It staggers the mind that so many took such an obvious con man so seriously. And while I enjoy his movies, Tom Cruise is beneath contempt. I feel sorry for the guy, though. Imagine his shock and horror when he discovers just how badly deceived he has been.

Lots of people are beguiled by false prophets. And many of them are intelligent. Waco was actually filled with well-educated people. They dropped everything to worship a goofy high-school dropout. They even gave him their wives. Weird stuff.

I thought Scientology was from a bet with Heinlein in a bat sbout making a religion?
I read Battle Circle in middle or early high school. It was ok fiction. I read Battlefield Earth about the same time. It was similar. Heinlein was great, but RE Howard's early Conan stories and Piers Anthony's Split infinity-Blue Adept books and Xanth and of course Fritz Lieber were really my jam. Lord of the Rings was also made in friendly rivalry between Tolkien and Lewis, who made Narnia.

As far as I can tell that's an urban legend. However, Hubbard's bigamous wife, Sarah Northrup, is on record that Hubbard said to her numerous times that "the only way to make any real money is by starting a religion." In a letter written to Robert Heinlein by L. Sprague de Camp, the writer makes very plain he considered Hubbard an incorrigible grifter, and warns Heinlein to be on the lookout for Hubbard to show up again "working the wounded veteran con" and asking for money. It seems clear from context that both famous writers knew perfectly well who and what Hubbard was. So the legend is entirely true in spirit if not in detail. I tried reading Battlefield Earth when I was 17 or so; I couldn't get past the first 3 chapters. The film of the same name is famously, hilariously awful. Everything you name is infinitely better than anything Hubbard ever managed, especially Howard's Conan stories. If you're inclined to try a biography that reads like the most garish spy fiction from the 60s, I recommend this book about ol' L. Ron. www.amazon.com/Bare-Faced-Messiah-True-Story-Hubbard/dp/1909269360/ref=d_pd_sbs_vft_med_sccl_1_1/144-6481891-5546727?pd_rd_w=GzZax&content-id=amzn1.sym.979276af-0315-48f7-920c-ae1ddfce33e2&pf_rd_p=979276af-0315-48f7-920c-ae1ddfce33e2&pf_rd_r=W1YRXWPWKZBWJJBN5Y20&pd_rd_wg=30QOX&pd_rd_r=1bd99ef5-6ae2-4308-b063-352dab3e9167&pd_rd_i=1909269360&psc=1
